We approach sustainability from a business perspective. We must build a business case for any issue we address, and we must be able to develop it into practical tools that can be implemented at our operations, with the goal of improving overall company performance by focusing effort and resources where it counts - at our operations.

Every decision we make is tested against four core values:

• operate safely
• make a profit
• protect the environment
• treat people and communities well.

This approach gives structure to our decision making and keeps us on track when we’re faced with difficult choices.

Our corporate office and our operations are jointly responsible for sustainability. Management at head office and at each operation implement policies, systems and standards, and they assess and report on actual performance and results.

The Safety, Environmental and Community Affairs Committee of the Board meets quarterly to review our performance, ensure that we’re managing key issues appropriately, taking the necessary steps to minimize risk and operating in a way that’s consistent with our values.
